Environmentally Focused & Locally Driven
In the small hillside farming community of Paramin in Trinidad and Tobago, the landscape is marked by steep hills and a susceptibility to landslips. In 2016, a local NGO called IAMovement introduced a model called the Vetiver Education & Empowerment Project (VEEP), which trained community members on the many benefits of the Vetiver plant, particularly its ability to prevent landslips, reduce surface runoff, and improve soil quality. Through the VEEP programme, community members learned how to properly install and propagate the plants, providing them with a sustainable solution for preventing/reducing erosion and landslides
Since then several communities across Trinidad and Tobago and other Caribbean islands including Dominica, St Lucia, Antigua and Grenada have been introduced to VEEP. It has taught local and migrant women how to use the leaves and roots of the plant to create beautiful handicrafts, essential oils, and soaps. This provided them with an opportunity to create sustainable livelihoods and support their families and communities.
As a result of the success of the VEEP program, the House of Vetiver brand was established to help regulate and channel the wide range of products produced within these communities to the market. Every purchase of a House of Vetiver product empowers and supports these rural communities in various localities around the Caribbean.
